Dashboard update
After much messing about with dependencies and paths, I managed to finally get Dashboard to compile and run. Now I need to figure out how to populate that nice blank little box I have on my screen :-)

You wouldn't want to break something now, would you?
Trying out a newer version of Evolution, in order to get something else working (CVS version of Nat Friedman's Dashboard) that has a whole bunch of dependencies on things that are so new, they're not even in the unstable branch of Gentoo's packages.
That's why I've bitten the bullet and got ebuilds from BreakMyGentoo, whose mascot, Barry the Cow, you can see as the icon for this blog entry.

Keeping cool
My laptop is a bit flaky these days. I think it has a loose connection on the graphics card somewhere, but its still stable enough to be usable, except when it gets hot. So after installing the toshiba_acpi kernel module, I knocked up the following little script (which needs running as root or at least under sudo

#!/bin/bash
echo "force_on:1" > /proc/acpi/toshiba/fan
cat /proc/acpi/toshiba/fan

and now I've forced the fan to be permanently on which means my machine runs a good 10 degrees centigrade cooler.

Invisible programming languages
There exists a programming language whose syntax consists solely of the whitespace characters (CR, LF, Tab, Space). It will run small applications written in code that, due to its whitespace nature, is to all and intents and purposes, invisible. Appropriately, the language is called Whitespace

Nethack for Yopy
Having a few problems compiling NetHack for my Yopy. I did manage to find a precompiled binary, but they hadn't compiled it with the options I wanted, so I'm rebuilding it from source, and its proving problematic. The GNU make on the Yopy doesn't seem to default to using Makefile like on my main machines, so thats one of the reasons the build is failing. Once I get a working executable, I'll try and make an RPM of it for others to use, and post it somewhere.
