Another day, another server
Another day, another serverfrom the never-have-too-many-puters dept.
Got given an old spare PC by a friend whose machine I'm repairing, so I'm rebuilding it as a web server. I've cannibalised another machine at the same time to get the best components across the two machines. Its still only an AMD K6-2/500, so not the fastest machine in the world, but I've tripled the memory, added another 20gb hard drive to match the one it already had, and plonked a network card in there.
Installing Ubuntu in server mode, but I think my CD is a bit flaky, as it keeps claiming corruption. I'm currently downloading a fresh ISO to burn at a lower speed on the CD writer - hopefully this will make a "cleaner" copy. WIth a bit of luck, should have a new server at home soon.
Also added to my kit was a spare 17" CRT monitor. Ever since my 19" blew up, I've been stuck with a tiny LCD screen which won't let me go to a resolution higher than 1024x768, which I hate. I was used to the 1600x1200 that both my home and work monitors allow me. The new 17" lets me up to 1280x1024, which is better I suppose.
Rebuilding
Rebuildingfrom the back-to-Windows-hell dept.
Rebuilt my desktop box at home this weekend, back to a dual-boot (Windows XP and Linux) configuration. I need to run some Windows stuff (development environment to make a windows app for someone, and Acid Pro to do mashups easier!). Still, nice that
Wine let me run the required keygen from my Linux laptop in preparation
Lunch Reloaded
Lunch reloadedfrom the perils-of-eating dept.
Currently making my second attempt at having lunch, having found a bug in the first one.... I know I'm a programmer, but that wasn't the kind of debugging I had in mind!

Virtually going nowhere
Virtually going nowherefrom the processor-you-have-dialled-has-not-been-recognised dept.
Tried installing
VMWare on my
Ubuntu Linux machine so that I could develop and test some programs I want to port over to Windows. After a hefty 95mb download and a wait while it installed, it finally told me that my processor (a
Via C3) isn't supported. Didn't tell me that before I started. Eventually found the list of
unsupported processors in a Knowledge Base article tucked away in the depths of the VMWare website. Bah!

The archive links on the left have now been brought up to date for your viewing pleasure. Not sure why
Blogger isn't doing this automatically like its supposed to, but manually adding one line of HTML per month isn't too much of a chore I suppose.

Sudoku solverfrom the clever-stuff-with-numbers dept.
A colleague at work has put together this very clever little
Sudoku solver using just Javascript and a logical mind! As he stated, "Nothing fancy, but it uses logic rather than brute force"

Lethargy
Lethargyfrom the am-I-bothered? dept.
Not dead, nor given up on blog. Just can't be bothered to think of anything to put in lately, plus the additional impact of Christmas/New Year taking time away. Will be back with details of my latest projects, discoveries and experiences soon.
